Albert Gooderham

Colonel Sir Albert Edward Gooderham, KCMG〔(A.E. GOODERHAM DIES; CREATED K.C.M.G. JAN. 1 ) in the Montreal Gazette, April 26, 1935〕 (June 2, 1861 - April 25, 1935) was a Canadian distiller, financier, soldier, and philanthropist. He was a son of George Gooderham Sr.,〔(Dean Beeby, “GOODERHAM, GEORGE,” ) in Dictionary of Canadian Biography, vol. 13, University of Toronto/Université Laval, 2003–, accessed October 11, 2015.〕 and his grandfather was distiller William Gooderham.
Gooderham became a managing director at Gooderham and Worts in 1905 and vice-president in 1912.〔
Outside of his family business, he served in various corporations:
* Bank of Toronto
* Canada Permanent Mortgage Corporation
* Confederation Life Association
* Dominion of Canada Guarantee and Accident Company
Gooderham founded the Canadian Academy of Music in 1911, and invited Luigi von Kunits to Canada to teach at the Academy.〔(Gooderham, Col Albert ) at the Canadian Encyclopedia〕〔(Lift high the glass to Albert Gooderham ), from the Toronto Star, by Donald Jones, September 27, 1986 (archived at pqarchiver.com)〕 In 1929, Gooderham survived the stock market crash with his fortune largely intact; during the financial crisis that followed, he kept the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from bankruptcy.
He was also the chairman of the Ontario branch of the Red Cross, and he donated farm land for the establishment of Connaught Laboratories north of Toronto.
He joined the 10th Royal Grenadiers as second lieutenant in 1885 and later commanded the unit.〔
